Plant dahlias on sunny and partially shady sites. Choose spots that are sheltered from wind to protect frail stems from breaking and other injuries. From April to June, the tuberous rootstocks should be planted about five centimetres deep.  Dahlia develops particularly well in sandy-clay, fertile, and permeable soil. It requires watering during the entire vegetation period. Wilted flowers must be removed to stimulate plants to produce new buds. Dahlia requires fertilizing too. You can use manure, compost, or mineral fertilizers with limited nitrogen content.  Dahlia belongs to plants that are sensitive to low temperatures. Cut the shoots right above the ground after the first frost and excavate the tuberous rootstocks. Be careful not to damage them. After they have dried a bit, remove the superfluous soil and put the rootstocks into baskets or open boxes with sand, peat, or sawdust. Store dahlia rootstocks in a cool, dry place until the next planting in spring.
