The Striped Ambition dahlia thrives in the sunlight and in partial shade. Characteristic dahlia rootstocks grow healthy in permeable, light soil that contains plenty of nutrients. This soil should always be moist, yet never flooded. It is worth preparing the site for dahlia culture already in autumn. The place should be properly tilled and fed with fermented compost or decomposed manure. Before planting dahlia in spring you can enrich the site with a complex mineral fertilizer with low nitrogen content that would not stimulate plants to produce too much foliage.

Dahlia belongs to plants that are sensitive to cold and therefore can be planted only mid May, after the "ice saints". That is also why you should dig out dahlia rootstock in autumn and store it in a room where temperature does not drop below the freezing point.
