Endive (Cichorum intybus) "Variegata di Castelfranco" will appeal to gardeners with practical approach to gardening, beacause it combines beauty with usability. This productive variety intended for autumn and early winter harvest develops pale, cream-white leaves with a decorative, intricate marbling of purple stripes and dots. They are regular, oval-shaped and gathered in rather loose, round heads, only slightly resembling cabbages.
Seeds of the variety offered here are recommended to be sown indoors under glass or under covers late in spring or early in summer. Seedlings can also be raised on a seed bed. Endives are harvested from the middle of September until the first frosts. Nicely formed heads of "Variegata di Castello" endive adorn vegetable beds. Their fresh, delicately tasting leaves can be consumed directly in salads and sandwiches. They contain well assimilable proteins, healthy sugars and quite large amounts of A, B-complex, C and PP vitamins, as well as minerals - phosphorus, iron and calcium.
