Garden vervain, or verbena, is a reliable annual plant with low cultivation requirements. It forms small, broadly spreading bushes. Flat clusters of purple flowers appear on the tops of stems that have a slightly hairy surface. The flowering period is very long and lasts from June to the end of October. The abundance of blooms can be additionally supported by removing wilted inflorescences. This plant grows up to 25 cm tall. This size makes it just perfect for border edgings, planting alongside pavements and paths and filling gaps in the foreground of flower beds. Garden verbena is a fantastic plant for containers and boxes. It looks great in combination with other species of popular balcony and terrace plants, but it will look equally beautiful when planted alone.
Garden vervain prefers sunny, sheltered positions, with humous and drained soil. It will succeed in less favourable conditions, too. It requires watering during extended drought periods. Vervain responds positively to fertilization - particularly with a special flowering plant fertilizer.
Vervain cultivation begins in early spring with sowing seeds to a heated hotbed or greenhouse. After emergence, seedlings need to be pricked out and pruned in order to allow them to develop a prettier habit. Transplant seedlings to the permanent site in the second half of May. The spacing recommended for garden vervain is 20 x 30 cm.
One package contains 0.5 g of purple garden vervain seeds. Look for the basic growing instructions and the sow-by date at the back of the package.
