Tulip bulbs planted in autumn will grow well in almost any garden soil as long as it is permeable and light. They need at least several hours of exposure to sunlight to develop properly. Plant them ten to fifteen centimetres deep. Water tulip bulbs right after planting so they can take root before the winter. If no compost was applied before planting, you can feed tulips with complex or organic fertilizers until the flowers develop. Annual excavation of the bulbs is not necessary, yet recommended. At the turn of June and July dig out, dry, and clean the bulbs before storing them in a well-ventilated room until autumn, when they can be planted again in the ground and in pots.
