The "Riviera" lobelia is a unique annual plant that develops blue flowers with a white eye. It develops extremely attractive carpets that vibrate with vivid colours. The single tufts consist of 15 to 30 cm tall slender stalks. The brightly coloured, small, two-lipped flowers with white accents give a true beauty show from June to end of October. The plant has a compact, dome-shaped appearance. Lobelia is often grown as a container plant. It looks splendidly in hanging baskets and tall planters or boxes. It constitutes a dependable, eye catching decoration of a balcony, terrace or gazebo. It provides a nice alternative to add to a mixed border or flower bed. It looks charming on edgings, too.
Lobelia seeds should be sown in greenhouses or indoors in February and March. We recommend to mix the tiny seeds with sand in order to facilitate sowing. Pressing the seeds into the soil with a wooden plank should replace covering the site with soil. Keeping the soil moist is of utmost importance - use a sprinkler in order not to wash away the seeds. Prick out the young plants after they develop two pairs of true leaves. Plant the seedlings in small groups due to their small size. That way you will be able to grow compact, dense tufts that are covered with flowers. Transfer the seedlings to the target site in the second half of May.
This plant grows best on sunny sites, but tolerates partial shade. It requires a permeable, moderately fertile, sandy-loam soil. Regular watering is the key to success in lobelia cultivation. The soil needs to be moist all the time. Feed the plants with multicomponent fertilizers during the periods of most abundant blooming. Topping the stems after the flowering period stimulates the plant to produce new buds.
One package contains 0.2 g of the blue white-eyed "Riviera" lobelia seeds. The basic plant facts and growing tips were printed on the back of the package.
