The needle-petal aster "Comet" (Callistephus chinensis) belongs to the rather low growing aster cultivars, reaching 40 - 50 cm in height. It delights with subtle and tender build of its blooms that are made of long, curled petals that resemble needles. Flowers start to appear on plants already at the beginning of summer and develop steadily until first summer frosts. Needle petal aster makes for a great cut flower, as it retains freshness and great looks for a long time. Its large, dark red inflorescences will add colour to every garden border. They look magnificent in company of other flowers and in larger groupings.
Asters can be easily cultivated from seeds. Prepare seedlings early in spring in a warm and bright room. You may, though, sow aster seeds directly onto the ground in May. Seedlings would be ready for transplantation to the permanent site after 6 - 8 weeks. Bear in mind that these plants are sensitive to low temperatures, therefore you can only transplant them outside in the second half of May. Needle petal asters grow best and bloom abundantly on sunny sites, although they will also survive partial shade. You only need to provide them with a nutrient-rich, moist, permeable soil.
