Planting time

Before planting, soak the bulbs in lukewarm water for several hours to encourage growth. Ranunculus should be planted in spring from April to May, or in autumn from September to October. If purchased in autumn, overwinter the bulbs in pots in a cool, bright spot and move them outdoors in spring once frosts have passed. They thrive best in fertile, well-drained, moderately moist soil with a neutral pH, in a sunny or lightly shaded position.

Plant the bulbs at a depth of 5–7 cm, with the claws facing downwards.

Planting spacing

A spacing of 15–20 cm between bulbs is recommended, both in the ground and in containers. This supports healthy growth and makes care easier.

Tomer ranunculus forms neat, upright clumps, reaching a moderate height suitable for beds, pots and mixed arrangements.

Flowering period

In the ground, Tomer ranunculus flowers from late June through to August. When grown in containers and planted earlier in warmer conditions, the first blooms may appear as early as May. The timing of planting allows you to adjust both the onset and duration of flowering. Removing spent flowers regularly encourages further bud development.

Winter hardiness

Ranunculus asiaticus does not tolerate frost. Once flowering has finished, lift the bulbs, clean them and store them until spring in a dry, airy, cool place (5–10°C). Pots planted in autumn should be kept indoors over winter and watered sparingly.
