Bean 'Piekny Jas' (Phaseolus coccineus) is a pole bean cultivar whose stems may grow even 3-4 m long. It is grown for dry seeds. It brings rich crops of large, white, kidney-shaped seeds. They are a valuable source of plant proteins, of which they contain 20% of dry weight. Apart from that they also contain phosphorus, calcium, magnesium, iron and the B vitamins. You would be able to prepare tasty soups, main courses and salads out of them. They may also be used for vegan pates or dumpling filling.
Bean is a thermophilic plant so its seeds may be sown in the second half of May the earliest. You may also grow this vegetable from seedlings produced at home. We recommend to plant it in 2 x 1.5 m spacings. You should provide the plants with strong poles, upon which they could easily climb. The harvest falls for end of summer and may continue till first autumn frosts. Warm, sunny and wind-sheltered border would be the perfect site for cultivation of the 'Piękny Jaś - Handsome Johnny' bean cultivar. It prefers fertile, moderately moist soils that are rich in humus.
