The Portuguese squill (Scilla peruviana) belongs to the most beautiful squill plants. It grows in the wild in southern Europe and in the northern parts of Africa. This charming flower that grows 30 to 50 cm on average develops a rosette of lanceolate leaves from which the strong flower stalks emerge. These stalks end with dense flower clusters. These are usually blue, although may also turn purplish. Up to 200 single flowers may develop on one stem and form cone-shaped inflorescences that bloom in April and May. The blooming period is long what additionally increases the plant's ornamental value. At the end of summer the leaves start to dry off and the plant enters the dormancy stage in which it remains until the start of the next season. The Portuguese squill looks particularly attractive on the background of lower borders, surrounded by flower groupings and around the shrubs. This plant can also be successfully cultivated in planters. Even though this squill does not grow that abundantly as in its natural habitat, it is still worth your attention. Its majestic appearance, underscored by the vivid colour, adds a touch of noble elegance and lightness to the flower beds.

Bulbs of this exceptionally beautiful plant should be planted in autumn. Plant them in September and October, 6 to 8 cm deep and 10 cm apart. This squill prefers fertile and permeable soils. Due to its frost sensitivity, choose wind-sheltered and warm sites for this species. It requires a thick cover of compost and leaves, bark or straw during the winter. It also needs to be watered during drought periods and must be regularly weeded. You may grow it on one site for several years or dug out in July and stored in cool, airy and dry interiors until the next planting in autumn.

The price offered here is valid for 1 bulb sized 18 to 20 cm in circumference.
