Purple lesser periwinkle is a charming, low-growing, evergreen subshrub that enjoys tremendous popularity in European gardens. It should not come as a surprise, as this rather inconspicuous plant has plenty of advantages. Lesser periwinkle can grow in partial shade, quickly covers the area where it is planted, and is adorned with marvellous tiny flowers. This plant is first and foremost used as covering or bedding plant. Dark green patches wonderfully adorn shaded flower beds and rock gardens, where they create a spectacular background for plants that produce leaves of different colour. The low, spreading shoots of the lesser periwinkle are covered with oval, leathery leaves. The stalks that point up carry five-petal, purple flowers. They appear on the plants in April and May, but this species is able to produce flowers all summer long.

Lesser periwinkle belongs to plants that do not require much care. It grows best in soil that supplies it with enough nutrients, yet it would also survive in lesser soil too. This plant tolerates a rather wide range of soil reaction. Slightly moist soil suits it fine, though a short draught period will not hurt it. Lesser periwinkle is an easy-to-grow, quickly growing plant that delights with its spectacular, shiny foliage, and charming small flowers. It fits all places where you need a hardy, low plant that covers a less attractive area.

We hereby offer one seedling of the purple flowered lesser periwinkle. Basic plant facts and growing instructions were printed on the package label.
