The purple trailing lobelia is an annual plant with tender shoots that create clouds of tiny blooms in hanging pots. Their unmatched beauty and abundance of blooms contribute to the high popularity of this plant. The thick, trailing habit looks particularly charming in balcony boxes, taller pots and bowls. The lobelia would also create nice colour accents in the garden with the plethora of its tiny purple-blue flowers. Broad spreading of the plants helps to achieve the flowering ball effect that offers dazzling visual experience. You may plant this lobelia in rock gardens too. Its slender twisting stems will create a flowery pillow in rockery arrangements. It offers both a great contrast and a nice addition to single colour groupings in different shades.
Lobelias need a sunny or partially shady site in order to grow healthy and bloom abundantly. Scorching sun should be avoided, as it makes flowers faded and tiny. The soil used in cultivation of this flowering plant should be fertile and permeable. Lobelia does not like waterlogging roots, hence the watering should not be too exuberant. We recommend to grow this plant on sites that are not exposed to heavy rainfall, because pouring water destroys its slender stalks. In order to maintain the abundant blooming the plants should be selectively trimmed. The long blooming period of this species requires fertilization. Use multicomponent flowering plant fertilizers for that purpose.
Lobelia seeds should be sown at home or in a greenhouse in February and March into not too compact soil. Press the tiny seeds gently into the soil, but do not cover them with an additional layer. Prick out the seedlings during the two leaf stage onto a hotbed or peat pots. Transplant the pricked out seedlings onto the target site in the garden mid-May. The flowers start to bloom in June. The tiny saturated flowers adorn the garden until October.
Each package contains 0.1 grams of seeds. General plant information, growing tips and the sow-by date can be found at the back side of the package.
