The Shakespeare winter onion belongs to early varieties intended for autumn planting. Round bulbs of this variety, covered with tight brown scale, distinguish it from other varieties. Inside, there is white and crunchy flesh. Shakespeare onion gives high yield, suitable for short-term storage. September and October is the recommended time for planting winter onion. Warm, sunny site with a fertile, non-crusting, medium-compact soil that is rich in humus and has a neutral reaction provide winter onion with best growing conditions. Plant winter onion a bit deeper than varieties you plant in spring. Cover bulb tips with a three-to-four centimetres thick layer of soil. Keep bulbs should five to six centimetres (about two inches) apart, in rows set every twenty to twenty-five centimetres (eight to ten inches). Weed the area and remove stones before planting to enable bulbs to develop.
