The Shakespeare winter onion belongs to early varieties intended for autumn planting. Round bulbs of this variety, covered with tight brown scale, distinguish it from other varieties. Inside, there is white and crunchy flesh. Shakespeare onion gives high yield, suitable for short-term storage. Resistance to low temperatures and many diseases belong to advantages of the Shakespeare onion. It is considered delicious, not-too-pungent, and having a rich flavour. It tastes great in soups, sauces, and meat or vegetarian dishes. Shakespeare winter onion can be harvested in bundles as early as May, while onions with drying scales are harvested in early July. September and October is the recommended time for planting winter onion.
