Asparagus is a fairly common perennial plant. It grows white shoots which are the edible portion of this variety, should be cut daily from the spring to mid-June. Asparagus needs to be fertilised in order to grow rapidly. This plant is cultivated mainly for the edible shoots.
Growing: in the spring, sow the seeds in a seedbed in rows in 30cm spacings and 8-10cm spacings within each row. To boost germination, soak the seeds in lukewarm water for 3 to 4 days. In the following spring, plant out in 150x50cm spacings in positions that are 20-25 centimetres deep. A year after the seeds have been sown, fertilise the plants intensively to stimulate their growth. In the spring of the following year, form 30-35cm high mounds. Cut the sprouting shoots before or after their tips have emerged. Dig up the mounds in mid-June in every year of cultivation, letting the sprouting shoots grow further. The plants grow best in light calcareous soils.
