The Sopelek spring onion is an interesting variety that produces elongated bulbs medium early. This onion reliably produces crops even in less favourable weather and matures evenly. Its bulbs weigh 150 to 200 grams on average. Their unique, elongated shape facilitates quick chopping of this vegetable. The golden-yellow scale effectively protects the tender inner parts. Sopelek spring onion tastes great raw and constitutes an excellent addition to salads in that form. Its distinct taste and aroma complements meat dishes and harmonizes with cured meat and spreads. Presented variety is harvested between July and September.

Spring onion bulbs prove to be a reliable growing method for both amateur gardeners and professional farmers. This onion cultivation method can speed up the harvest by four to six weeks. You can plant them already in March in rows every 30 centimetres, keeping the bulbs five to eight centimetres apart. Put the bulbs 3/4 of their height deep into the soil. The soil should be thoroughly fertilized, preferably with compost or manure. Choose loosened, aerated soil free of stones and larger lumps so the growing bulbs can develop unhindered. Taking care of an onion culture is easy. It is limited to weeding and watering during drought. Onions should be harvested on a sunny day, when the greens start to break, and the roots begin to die. Tear bulbs out of the soil and leave them for several days to dry in the sun. A well dried onion can be stored over a longer period.

Spring onions can also be grown at home in pots and planters. Fresh chives and small bulbs are perfect for daily use in the kitchen.
