Kiwano, an annual plant which is also known as Horned Melon, is a vine in the melon family, with long reclining shoots. It grows large oval-shaped fruit that grow 10 to 15 centimetres in length and 200 to 300 grams in weight. The fruit have very juicy flesh with a very refreshing flavour. Kiwano is often used as an ingredient in salads or low-calorie desserts. Not only are the fruit edible, they are also used as a beautiful decoration.

Growing: sow 2 to 3 seeds in pots (7 to 8 centimetres in diameter) in the second half of April. The seeds germinate in around two weeks at 20-24°C. Plant out the seedlings that have developed 4 to 5 leaves into the soil in 1x1m spacings in the second half of May. Grow the plants in covered sunny positions in moist fertile soils.
