Squash Potimarron is a well loved variety that combines excellent flavour with strong ornamental appeal. The skin ripens to an intense orange red, while the flesh is smooth, aromatic, and gently nutty. The fruits are medium sized, usually weighing 1-2.5 kg, and the skin is thin, which makes preparation easier. Potimarron works beautifully in the kitchen for roasting, creamy soups, bakes, sauces, and purees. It holds its texture and depth of flavour, giving dishes a distinctive seasonal character. Thanks to its vivid colouring, it is also a great choice for autumn displays in the garden and for decorative arrangements.
Sow the seeds 3-4 cm deep. This depth supports even germination and healthy early growth. Keep the soil lightly moist so seedlings emerge quickly and develop strongly.
Sow directly outdoors from May to June, once the soil has warmed and the risk of frost has passed. In warm, sunny spots, plants grow vigorously, producing strong vines and well developed fruits.
For an earlier start, sow under cover in April, for example in a tunnel or greenhouse. This produces sturdy young plants ready to be planted out, helping to bring the harvest forward.
Plant out seedlings from May to June, once the risk of chilly nights has eased. Choose a warm, sunny position sheltered from wind. Plants perform best in fertile, free draining soil rich in nutrients, where they grow quickly and crop generously.
Space plants about 120 x 100 cm apart. This gives the vines and large leaves enough room to develop and supports even ripening and well sized fruits.
Harvest from August to October. A deep, saturated skin colour is a good sign that fruits are ready. Fully ripe squash can be stored for many weeks in a cool, dry place, and the flavour often becomes even more intense over time.
Potimarron is easy to grow. It prefers fertile, humus rich, well aerated soil and needs regular watering, especially during flowering and fruit set. It responds well to feeding with compost. With plenty of warmth and sun, it rewards you with large, tasty fruits and a distinctive aroma.
