Sweet Pea - Countess Cadogan - Lathyrus odoratus - Scented blooms in soft pastel shades - Fresh Seeds

Sweet pea Countess Cadogan is a charming annual climber that can turn any garden space into a romantic, flowering corner. Its slender, delicate stems grow to around 2.5 m, forming a graceful green screen. The flowers, in soft shades of pale blue and lavender, catch the eye and release a gentle, distinctive fragrance that lingers through the summer. This variety brings a light, elegant feel and looks beautiful on pergolas, arbours, fences, and balconies.

Sowing depth

Sow Countess Cadogan sweet pea seeds at a depth of 3 to 4 cm. This supports quick germination and healthy early growth. A light covering of soil also helps protect the seeds from drying out and from temperature changes.

Outdoor sowing time

Sow outdoors in March or April, when the soil has started to warm and there is no risk of frost. Sown at this time, the plants will flower in early summer.

Spacing

Keep about 10 to 20 cm between plants. This gives the climbers enough space to spread and form dense green walls. If sown too closely, air flow can be reduced and flowering may be less abundant.

Flowering period

Countess Cadogan sweet pea flowers generously from June to September. During this period the garden fills with fragrance and a soft pastel palette. Removing faded flowers regularly encourages the plant to form new buds, helping it flower for longer and more freely.

Growing advice

For the best results, grow sweet peas in a sunny spot or a place that is slightly sheltered from wind. The soil should be fertile, free draining, and kept evenly moist, as very dry ground can reduce flowering. Before sowing, it is worth soaking the seeds overnight in lukewarm water to speed up germination. The shoots have tendrils that easily cling to supports, creating a thick curtain of leaves and flowers. The plant responds well to regular watering and feeding with natural fertilisers rich in phosphorus and potassium. Avoid shaded areas, where plants flower less and the scent is weaker.
