"Royal Navy Blue" sweet pea (Lathyrus odoratus) is a variety producing extraordinary dark blue blooms. This annual creeping plant develops long shoots that may grow even 2.5 m long. This extremely decorative variety blooms abundantly in the summer months. Large, butterfly-shaped flowers grow gathered in small clusters from short pedicels growing from leaf angles. The sweet scent of this species also belongs to its advantages. Sweet pea would rapidly cover garden fences, trellises and pergolas. We advise to grow them close to gazebos or in pots on terraces and balconies in order to enjoy not only the visual beauty of the blooms but their pleasant scent, too.
Sweet pea seeds are sown in spring directly to the ground, 2 - 3 seeds per hole. They will germinate better if you soak them in water for 24 hours before the sow. If you wish that sweet pea blooms a few weeks earlier, sow its seeds into pots placed indoors. Sunny sites would be best for the cultivation of this species. Sweet pea needs well drained, constantly and moderately moist soil rich in nutrients.
