Red tropical sage (Salvia splendens) looks like a charming flame on a border. This low growing annual plant reaches 25 to 40 cm in height and similar breadth. Its ornamental value comes from elongated, denticulated dark green leaves, that form a dense rosette in the lower part of the plant and particularly from the erect inflorescences consisting of tightly packed, fiery red blooms that are approximately 5 cm long. Scarlet bracts, that retain their decorative value even after the blooms have withered, add to the overall appeareance.

The charming red tropical sage is cultivated from seedlings in our climate. Young plants can be easily produced on a hotbed or at home in a mini greenhouse. The sow might take place in February and March, while the young plants are transplanted to the borders in the second half of May. Since this plant develops an ornamental habit, blooms reliably (from June to October), sports saturated colours and grows rather low, it will form a great front of smaller border or an edging of a larger flower bed, accompanied by equally sturdy flossflowers or silver ragwort. Red tropical sage thrives in container cultivation, too. It is often planted in parks and on squares. It needs sunlight and a permeable, humous soil to bloom abundantly.

Each package contains 0.3 g red tropical sage seeds. Package information contains a growing guide and the sow-by date.
