Lavatera - White - Lavatera trimestris - Airy charm for garden borders - Fresh Seeds

Lavatera White (Lavatera trimestris) is a striking annual with a gentle, natural look. Its upright, branched stems and large, pure white cup-shaped flowers create a fresh, elegant display that suits beds, quiet corners of the garden, and cut flower arrangements. The plant grows to about 60 cm tall and flowers continuously from June to October. It also attracts bees and butterflies as a useful source of nectar. Despite its showy blooms, lavatera is easy to grow and does not need complicated care, making it suitable for both beginners and experienced gardeners.

Sowing depth

Sow lavatera seeds at a depth of about 1 cm. This provides good conditions for germination and healthy early growth.

When to sow outdoors

Sow outdoors in May, once the soil is well warmed and the risk of frost has fully passed. In these conditions, seeds germinate quickly and develop into strong, resilient plants.

When to sow under cover

You can start sowing under cover in April, for example in a tunnel or on a windowsill. This helps the plants develop earlier, and after transplanting they tend to flower sooner, bringing colour from the start of summer.

Planting time

Plant out well-rooted seedlings in May. This is the right time to move them to their final position, where they can grow freely and flower abundantly.

Spacing

Keep a spacing of 30 x 40 cm. This gives each plant room to develop and helps create a full yet airy display that is less prone to problems linked to excess moisture.

Flowering period

Lavatera White flowers from June to October, producing plenty of large white blooms with delicate petals. The flowers contrast beautifully with green foliage and keep borders looking light and attractive well into autumn.

Growing tips

Lavatera grows best in sun or light partial shade. It prefers fertile, free-draining, humus-rich soil and needs moderate watering, with the soil kept lightly moist but not waterlogged. It responds well to feeding with fertilisers intended for flowering plants, which supports strong growth and long flowering. It suits natural-style, romantic, and rustic gardens, and it also works well as a cut flower, staying fresh in a vase for a long time.
