Common blanketflower (Gaillardia aristata) is low growing perennial plant with beautiful, fiery red blooms that will introduce lively colour to every border. It develops compact, dense, small tufts consisting of stems densely covered with spiky leaves. On their tops sit large flower heads built of orange-brown disc flowers in the centre and orange-yellow ray flowers surrounding them. Blooming season of this plants lasts very long, from June until end of September.
Cultivation of the common gaillardia, as this plant is also called, will succeed on every kind of garden soil, provided it is not to moist and heavy, nor too dry or barren. Plants produce the most blooms in fully sunny sites. The seeds germinate quickly and therefore common blanketflower is usually grown from seedlings sown in May and June. Well developed seedlings are transplanted to flower beds in September. Fiery red blooms of this undemanding plant may also adorn a rock garden or any kind of balcony or terrace container.
