Ursinia (Ursinia anethoides) is an intriguing border plant that is also known as mountain marigold or common parachute daisy. It develops nice, spherical habit and grows 20 - 40 cm tall. Broadly branched stems are adorned with tender, feathery leaves. The blooms appear on the tops of the stems in the second half of summer. The inflorescences come in different shades of orange and yellow. The outer ray flowers have a dark red spot at the base, that creates a darker ring surrounding disc flowers. Ursinias look great on borders and flower beds, particularly rustic and naturalistic ones. They are perfect for cut flowers, as they retain their freshness and ornamental value in water for a long time.
Small ursinia seeds are sown under covers to containers or seeding trays. You may sow directly to the field, but only in the second half of spring. Bear in mind that these plants will bloom later. Transplant the seedlings to the garden after the last spring frosts are gone. Choose a sunny ans sheltered site. Ursinias thrive and produce the most blooms on medium fertile and permeable soils. You should water them every few days in longer drought periods.
