Common juniper (Juniperus communis) is a resistant, coniferous tree or shrub that grows 0.5 to 1.5 m tall. This graceful, easily cultivated plant develops a column-like or conical habit. Its ornamental value comes from densely packed, short, shiny, blue-green needles. Its shoots are decorated with greenish juniper berries that eventually turn black. Common juniper thrives both in field and pot cultivation. It will grow in any garden soil, including dry, sandy and lesser soils. It also shows great resistance to frost and drought.
Seeds of the common juniper can be sown to containers filled with permeable light soil for seedling preparation or directly to the ground. Recommended sowing times fall in March / April and September / October. In the first growth stages one ought to keep the developing young shrubs in containers. Only one or two-year old plants can be transplanted into open air in spring or autumn. Due to the compact habit and low requirements in regard to soil, common juniper forms great thorny hedges. One may also include it in tree-shrub groupings, introduce it to smaller gardens as solitaire plants or shape it as bonsai trees.
One package contains 0.3 g of common juniper seeds. The sow-by date and a growing guide are printed at the back side of the package.
