Avignon is a variety whose greatest asset is its exceptionally large flowers - when fully open, they can reach up to 20 cm across. The pale, creamy petals are marked with irregular purple streaks and flushes, so each bloom looks slightly different. The colouring does not fall evenly - sometimes the lighter background takes the lead, while at other times the stronger purple tones are more pronounced. The full, compact form of the flower heads makes the plant clearly visible in the garden, ensuring it does not disappear among other plantings.
Dahlia tubers are planted in spring, once the risk of frost has passed - usually from late April to May, when the soil has already warmed up. An earlier start is possible indoors, in pots placed in a bright position.
The tuber should be placed so that it sits beneath a layer of soil around 5-7 cm thick. The buds should be covered, but not too deeply.
It is worth allowing around 50 cm between plants. This provides enough room for development and good air circulation.
This variety grows to 80-110 cm in height, producing sturdy, upright stems capable of supporting its large flower heads.
Flowering lasts from July to October. Regular removal of faded blooms helps to maintain continuous flowering.
This dahlia does not overwinter in the ground. In autumn, after the first frosts, the tubers should be lifted and stored in a dry, cool place until the following spring.
Dahlia Avignon performs beautifully in perennial borders, home gardens, and as a cut flower for the vase. Thanks to its impressive blooms, it provides a striking accent in garden arrangements. It can be planted singly or in groups, where it creates bold patches of colour. This variety also looks excellent in containers on terraces and balconies.
