Plant dahlias on sunny and partially shady sites. Choose spots that are sheltered from wind to protect frail stems from breaking and other injuries. You can use manure, compost, or mineral fertilizers with limited nitrogen content.  Dahlia belongs to plants that are sensitive to low temperatures. Cut the stems close to the ground after the first autumn frost and dig out the tuberous roots. Be careful not to damage them. After they have dried a bit, remove the superfluous soil and put the rootstocks into baskets or open boxes with sand, peat, or sawdust. Store dahlia rootstocks in a cool, dry place until the next planting in spring.
