Dahlias are planted only after the May frost. Choose a place that is warm and sheltered from the wind. The soil should be fertilized with compost and thoroughly loosened. Dahlias belong to relatively undemanding plants. They thrive at sites where they have access to sunlight for 6 to 8 hours a day. Give them permeable and fertile soil. We recommend applying a drainage layer of pebbles or gravel at the bottom of planting holes. You can also force tubers in pots, and plant well developed seedlings in the garden to speed up the flowering. Dahlia rootstock must be covered with a few centimetres of soil and watered immediately after planting. Maintenance of the plant includes fertilization every 3 to 4 weeks, watering, at least twice a week, and removing faded flowers. At the beginning of cultivation, you can gently trim the shoots so that the plants spread better.

Dahlias are perennials that cannot winter in the ground. You have to dig out tubers in autumn and transfer to a room protected from frost. Discard all green parts and gently dry tubers before storing them.
