Garden dahlia (Dahlia variabilis) in semi-double flower variety consists of the prettiest, low-growing annual dahlia varieties producing large inflorescences in different shades of saturated colours. The plants form compact bushes that reach 40-50 cm in height and which decorative value lays in large, oval leaves, spreading in the bottom parts of the plants and flower heads, that develop one by one on tops of the stalks. All inflorescences consist of a couple of rings of magnificent petals, slightly bent inward. Garden dahlias are cultivated from seedlings, that can easily be produced on a hotbed or indoors, on seeding trays covered with glass. Seedlings are transplanted to borders in May. You should choose sunny sites with fertile, permeable, yet not overdried out soil. These plants will look great in centres of flower arrangements made of species with erect stems, such as tall varieties of snapdragon and flowers with single, flat inflorescences, like rudbeckias or blanket flowers. Dwarf dahlias would also look great in large pots or bowls.
