The German statice, also called Tatarian sea-lavender or Tatarian statice, is a spectacular perennial that produces huge panicles of pale, almost white flowers with a hint of blue or purple. This plant consists of a rosette of sturdy, leathery leaves. Naked, slender stems that end with conical panicles tower over the foliage. These branched stalks carry thousands of tiny, bell-shaped flowers. These flower clouds appear in the garden in summer, from June to end of August. The height of the plant during the flowering period reaches 60 cm. The marvellous mist of the small flowers looks great on sunny flower beds, flowery meadows, Mediterranean gardens and all arrangements with ornamental grasses. The magnificent flower clusters can be cut and put into vases or dried for further use in dry arrangements.
The German statice does not have any special cultivation requirements. It prefers fertile soil rich in humus, but will grow well in the majority of soils. However, it does not like wet, compact soils, where it is prone to freezing. It definitely prefers drier, moderately moist sites. It is, in general, resistant to low temperatures and can winter successfully in the garden. It brings the most and the most beautiful flowers on a warm and sunny site.
Seeds of the German statice should be used to produce seedlings. Sow onto a seed bed in April. The well developed seedlings are transferred to the permanent site late in summer, in August, in 25 - 30 x 30 cm spacings. The plants will bloom in the next year.
One package contains 0.1 grams of German statice seeds. The basic cultivation instructions and the sow-by date were printed on the back of the package.
