The hyacinth orchid (Bletilla striata), also known as the Chinese ground orchid, is an extraordinary perennial that ideally fits into shadowy garden spots. Modest size (30-40 cm of height), a compact habit and the exceptional ornamental value of the beautifully formed, fragrant blooms make it an ideal candidate for growing on any site, whether in the ground or in a container. The easy to grow hyacinth orchid develops narrow, erect, greyish-green leaves and erect, straight shoots that end with vividly pink blooms. These flowers are additionally adorned with striped, lush lips and resemble orchids grown at home, although their petals are longer and narrower. Hyacinth orchid blooms reach up to 3 cm in diameter and form clusters of 3 to 6. You would be able to enjoy them in full bloom all summer long, from middle of May until August. The Chinese ground orchid may become a unique decoration of the partially shaded border, a shady rock garden, pond edge or your favourite relaxation spot. We recommend to grow it densely, in larger groupings.

The first choice, large and healthy rhizomes that are available in our store should be planted in spring onto permeable and sufficiently moist soil. Hyacinth orchid develops best on partially shady sites, as it does not stand the midday sun. This relatively small, yet long-lived and long blooming plant may winter in the ground under a thick layer of dried leaves, tree bark or spruce twigs. If you fear that it would not stand extreme frost, transfer the rhizomes to a garage or cellar. We recommend to winter hyacinth orchids grown in containers in a cool room.

One package contains 1 large and healthy first choice rhizome. Each package contains the most important growing tips.
