Orange-red hot poker produces distinctive, elongated flower spikes in an intense orange shade, rising above a clump of narrow green leaves. The densely packed tubular flowers form spike-like panicles, making the plant clearly visible in the border. As it flowers, the flower spikes gradually change tone, with the upper part becoming lighter still. Its habit and the striking shape of the flowers make hot poker easy to pick out in garden arrangements.
