Large-flowered Mexican marigold "Albatros" (Tagetes erecta) is an annual, easily cultivated plant that develops compact, dense tufts consisting of stiff and densely leaved stems. Round, double, creamy white inflorescences with 10 cm in diameter appear atop the stems in June and remain until first frosts. Plants reach ca. 50 cm in height. "Albatros" Mexican marigold is used on borders in company of other annual or perennial flowers. It also perfectly fits into large pots. It may be grown for cut flowers, too. Marigolds excrete a characteristic, intense aroma that repels aphids and nematodes, so we recommend to grow it close to other plants, particularly vegetables.
"Albatros" marigold is usually grown from seedlings. For that purpose you need to sow seeds from mid-January to March into boxes in a greenhouse or to a seedbed. The ready seedlings may be transplanted to the permanent site mid-May, after the risk of frosts is gone, in 40 x 40 cm spacings. Seeds may also be sown directly to the soil in the second half of May. Plants prefer sunny sites, where they bloom most exuberantly, and constantly, moderately moist soil. They require regular watering during heat periods. In order to prolong the blooming time we recommend to remove the wilted inflorescences regularly.
