Wild strawberry "Rujana" (Fragaria vesca L.) is a plant of undisputed ornamental and practical value. Small subshrubs with slender, long stems that bend under the weight of fruit can be grown on furrows, under trees and bushes and in containers. In spring plants are sprinkled with relatively large, white blooms, from which conical, red wild strawberries form in early summer. Sweet, compact, beautifully fragranced and rich in vitamins fruit are a great addition to desserts. They can be used to decorate ice cream, pudding and cakes.
Seeds are sown late in winter and early in spring in a warm room. Shallow seeding trays filled with permeable, moisture retaining seeding soil are recommended for seedling production. Well developed young plants are transferred to the permanent site end of May, after the last late frosts. Wild, or woodland strawberries, require sunlight and fertile, not too heavy, moist soil. Highly productive and ornamental "Rujana" variety looks admirably in large pots and hanging baskets, it can also form a carpet bedding, growing between tall decidous trees in a natural style garden. Fruit are harvested as they ripen, from June until September.
