Yellow Watermelon ‘Janosik’ is the first true Polish watermelon variety whose flesh is yellow. This species grows well in temperate climates and produces large fruit; they grow 3.5 to 5.5 kilograms in weight. The rind of each fruit is dark green. Yellow Watermelon ‘Janosik’ has juicy and very sweet flesh with a relatively small amount of seeds.
Growing: sow the seeds in pots (7 to 8 centimetres in diameter) from mid- to late April. The seeds germinate in two weeks at 20-24°C. Plant out the seedlings that have developed 4 to 5 leaves into the soil in 1x1m spacings in the second half of May. Grow the plants in moist fertile soils in covered positions, ideally in full sun. The harvest starts in August and ends in September. The ripe fruit give a thump-like sound when knocked on.
