The Melon Pear, also known as Pepino, is a perennial plant, which is predominantly grown as an annual in temperate climates. Its reclining shoots produce mildly aromatic flowers along with beautiful decorative fruit, which are edible. The fruit are berries which grow 100 to 300 grams in weight; they are oval in shape and a lovely yellow, with slight violet stripes on the skin. The fruit are rich in vitamin C and iodine, while the flesh is soft, juicy and highly aromatic; they resemble melons in flavour. The Melon Pear can be used in many ways; the plants are a perfect addition to desserts or fruit salads, but they can also be frozen or candied. The ripe fruit are recommended to be stored at the room temperature for 3 to 4 months.
Growing: sow the seeds under cover in pallet planters or in pots in March. The seeds germinate in 2 to 3 weeks at 18-24°C. Plant out into a permanent position in the second half of May. This variety is recommended to be staked. Grow the plants in sunny positions in slightly moist fertile soils protected from the wind. This variety can also be grown in hanging containers or in balcony planters.
