The 'Felsy' alfalfa belongs to the small-seed plants of the bean family. It grows, depending on the species and variety from 30 to 90 centimetres tall. In Central Europe it is usually grown as a biennial or triennial plant. It develops strong root systems and rich foliage. It is perfectly suited for cultivation in various regions and tolerates dry sites. It quickly grows back after cutting, brings high yield and is resistant to diseases. Its green parts stand out with high protein content. This plant is widely used as animal fodder. Its properties help improve the microbiological conditions in the soil and increase the nitrogen content in the ground. Alfalfa improves the physical and mineral conditions of the soil too. The strong and broadly developing root system can absorb phosphorus and potassium from deeper soil layers. These properties result in better availability of the nutrients for the plants grown in the subsequent seasons on the same site. Alfalfa flowers are melliferous. We recommend to grow it close to apiaries, where it will form a honey meadow for bees and other pollinating insects.
Alfalfa is used as volume fodder in form of green matter and hay-silage. It is widely used for feeding milk and meat cattle. Farmers often combine alfalfa with grasses. It allows them to increase the nutritional value of the fodder that becomes well balanced in terms of proteins and carbohydrates.
The 'Felsy' alfalfa requires a warm and sunny site. It likes fertile, aerated, humous, alkaline soils. It will not succeed in soils that are heavy, moist, poor, sandy or overdried. This plant tolerates low temperatures, but might freeze during the snowless and extremely cold winters.
Alfalfa should be sown in the second half of April and at the beginning of May. You can either execute the pure seed or undersow with cereals and grasses. Do not sow deeper than 1.5 centimetre. Keep the rows 10 to 15 centimetres apart.
One package contains 1 kg of seeds, with the production lot and the sow-by date indicated on the package.
