Butternut squash "Waltham Butternut" (Cucurbita moschata) is an annual plant with a crawling habit. "Waltham Butternut" belongs to medium early varieties whose fruit ripen 110 - 120 days after planting the seedlings. It is intended for cultivation both in the field and under covers. Butternut squash fruit are large and bottle-shaped. Their bright orange flesh has a sweet, nutty flavour. They are covered with a thick, orange skin with a distinctive waxy coating. Fruit of this squash species are storable long-term as they maintain all their features for even 3 - 4 months. You may prepare tasty soups and purees out of butternut squash, but this vegetable also tastes great fried, steamed and baked. It stands out with high beta-carotene and minerals' content.
Due to a very long vegetation period we recommend to sow butternut squash at the earliest possible time. Prepare the seedlings in April already in a heated room and transplant to the field mid-May after the last spring frosts. At that time you may also sow directly to the field. Place 2 - 3 seeds per hole in 100 - 150 cm spacings. Please provide the "Waltham Butternut" squash with a sunny and wind-sheltered site with sandy-clay soil rich in nutrients and water.
