Cantaloupe "Melba" (Cucumis melo) is an early ripening variety. It is intended for cultivation under covers. When grown in the open field it needs covering with black plastic foil. This monecious plant shows medium vigour. The fruit it produces weigh 0.5 to 0.7 kg. Oval or reversely oval fruit are covered by creamy-beige skin with delicate netting. The small "Melba" fruit stand out with tender, buttery, delicious, aromatic, orange flesh.
Cantaloupe belongs to the most demanding plants in terms of the temperature. The optimal temperature for cantaloupe growth and crops development is between 23 - 28°C. Therefore we recommend to grow this fruit under covers or in the field covered with black plastic foil, that speeds up warming up of the soil. Cantaloupe is grown only from seedlings produced in a heated room. Beginning of March is the right time for this activity. Seeds need to be sown to pots or seeding trays filled with permeable peat substrate. Seedlings would be transplanted to the permanent site no earlier than end of May or beginning of June. Plant young plants into the moist and warm soil. It should also be fertile, rich in organic matter and humus. Always choose sites fully exposed to sun for cantaloupe cultivation.
