The Cape Gooseberry, a plant which is also called the Ground Cherry, is an annual that grows up to 1 metre in height. This variety branches out its rigid shoots fairly heavily and produces yellowish-orange berries in the second half of summer. The aromatic fruit, wrapped in thin coverings, are a little sweet and a little sour in taste. The Cape Gooseberry fruit can be eaten raw, as well as used as an ingredient in various fruit products. Having been dried, they greatly resemble raisins.
Growing: sow the seeds directly into the soil from February to March. The fruit are ready to be harvested from August to Septemer. The ripe fruit drop from the plant.
