Gladioli belong to the iris (Iridaceae) family and their name comes from the Latin word "gladius", meaning sword. It owes its name to the leaves that are long, straight and narrow - just like the weapon. There are several thousands gladiolus varieties that differ in colour, height and the occurrence of development stages. The "Blue Topic" stands out with exceptionally ornamental, vividly blue flowers and height that may reach up to 150 cm. Cultivation of gladioli is easy. The plants need a sunny site and a permeable, moderately moist soil in which you would plant the bulbs circa 10 cm deep in mid April. Make sure that the plants are protected from strong wind. Proper cultivation results in healthy development of the plants and abundant blooming that you could expect in high summer, from July to September. Care measures are limited to fertilization (especially if the soil is meagre), weeding and watering during drought periods. Temperatures below the freezing point may hurt the gladioli and therefore you should excavate them. A mature plant looks majestic and therefore eagerly used as garden decoration.
