Sugar Pea - Oregon Sugar Pod - Extended harvest, whole edible pods - Fresh Seeds

Sugar Pea Oregon Sugar Pod is a well loved variety known for its very sweet, delicate flavour and juicy, crunchy pods that can be eaten whole, straight from the plant or after brief cooking. It is both a tasty vegetable and an attractive addition to the garden, with slim green shoots and a generous crop. Plants grow to around 70 cm and perform best with supports, where they create neat green screens filled with well formed pods. This variety is ideal for eating fresh, for cooked dishes, stir fry, or freezing.

Sowing depth

Sow Oregon Sugar Pod seeds 4 to 5 cm deep. This depth helps protect the seeds from cold and drying out, supporting even germination and strong, healthy growth.

Outdoor sowing time

Start sowing outdoors in March or April, once the soil is warm enough and slightly moist. For a longer picking period, sow in batches every few days or weeks so you can enjoy fresh pods well into summer.

Spacing

Oregon Sugar Pod grows best at a spacing of 20 x 4 cm. This gives plants room to develop, improves air flow, and makes watering and harvesting easier. Suitable spacing also supports heavier crops and helps reduce the risk of fungal diseases.

Harvest time

Harvest takes place in June and July. Pick the pods when they are still light green, plump, and the seeds are only lightly outlined. At this stage they are sweetest and most aromatic. Regular picking encourages the plants to set new pods, extending the harvest and increasing overall yield.

Growing

Oregon Sugar Pod grows best in sunny, warm positions sheltered from strong wind. It prefers fertile, humus rich soil that is well aerated and kept moderately moist. Water regularly, as peas do not cope well with drought, but avoid overwatering. Plants do well in rows spaced 30 to 40 cm apart, which makes care and harvesting easier. Light supports or netting can be used to help the shoots climb freely. Applying organic fertiliser before the season improves soil structure and supports strong, healthy crops.
