Snow pea "Carouby" (Pisum sativum L. Saccharatum) is a medium early variety with a vegetation period of 75 - 80 days. Its stems grow 150 - 160 cm tall. Snow pea produces pods that lack the parchment, what enables you to eat them whole, together with the undeveloped, yet already sweet seeds. Snow pea pods may be eaten raw, boiled or fried. Snow pea is a vegetable with high nutritional value. Its seeds contain large amounts of vitamin C, E, K, B vitamins, carotene as well as minerals, including phosphorus, magnesium, iodine and iron. They are also a rich source of protein and fibre. The pod walls are also high in folic acid. You should introduce snow pea to your daily diet, because the vitamins and minerals it contains support the immune system and regulate cholesterene level in blood.
Snow pea "Carouby" is an easily cultivated vegetable and therefore is recommended for amateur cultivation. Seeds should be sown directly onto the field from March to April, 2 per hole in 3-4 cm spacings in rows 30 - 40 cm apart. Snow pea, also called mangetout - this term may also apply to snap pea - yields richest crops in fertile, humous, moderately moist, slightly acidic or neutral soils. Grow it on sunny and warm sites. Since the "Carouby" pea plants grow rather tall they need staking. Snow pea is harvested when the pods are fully developed and the seeds can only be barely felt under the pod walls. This usually happens from June to August. The harvest occurs repeatedly, every 2 - 4 days.
