The Sum and Substance hosta (Hosta), a plant that you might know from parks and city greeneries, is an unproblematic perennial that produces decorative leaves and flowers. Its vegetation period starts early, and the plant quickly reaches heights of up to 120 centimetres. From spring to late autumn, it is adorned with magnificent, yellow-green, broad, thick, cordate leaves. Lush clusters of slender, subtle, lavender purple flowers that sit atop erect stalks add lightness and charm to the plants in July. Since this variety reaches substantial size and delights with a cheerful unique leaf colour, it is worth growing it in front of flower beds, next to water reservoirs, alongside walls, and at damaged lawns it will quickly cover. It looks particularly stunning at the background of dark green conifers and in company of ferns.

The Sum and Substance hosta handles scorching sunlight particularly well, but in order to develop healthy and produce nicely coloured leaves, we recommend finding it a place in partial shade. Just like other hosta cultivars, it needs a fertile, rather compact, humous soil with a slightly acidic reaction. Plant rhizomes in spring but forget about digging them out in autumn - you only need to cover plants with a pile of dry mulch.
