Wood anemone (Anemone nemorosa) heralds the coming of spring. This species commonly grows in the wild across Central Europe. You can find patches of wood anemone in deciduous and mixed forests. Gardeners value the natural, delicate beauty of this plant. They use it as bedding plant that thrives under tall trees and large shrubs. Anemones go into dormancy in summer. That is why we recommend planting them next to plants that can quickly fill empty spots. Hosta, Siberian bugloss, and various fern varieties are perfect for that purpose. Anemone preferences make it thrive in woodland, natural, and rural gardens. Shaded flower beds, if there are some in your garden, are also a great site for anemone cultivation.

Woodland anemone is a perennial plant whose ten to twenty-centimetres-tall stems appear early in spring. Atop each grow three bracts that surround a single flower. It consists of six to sepals that look rosy outside and are pure white inside. Convex flower centre holds numerous anthers and stamens. A typical flower measures four centimetres in diameter. Anemone's basal leaves appear only after the flowering period. Wood anemones propagate through underground rhizomes.

Wood anemone belongs to plants that thrive in a fertile, humous, slightly acidic soil. It cannot stand dry or waterlogging ground. It winters outside even in harsher Central European climate. Plant anemone in spring or autumn. It does not require any special car, neither covering nor fertilizing. You can enrich the site with compost from time to time.
Wood anemone is poisonous. Always wear gloves when handling the plant.
