The California poppy, also called golden poppy, California sunlight or cup of gold, is an annual plant that dazzles with its subtle beauty. It is very easy to grow and undemanding and thrives both in the field and in pots. The California poppy, here available in the undeniably charming red-flowered version, grows quickly. It reaches 30 to 50 cm at the peak of the season. The flowering period starts at the beginning of summer in June. The subtle satin single flowers last until end of August and sometimes even longer. The tufts of feathery, grey green leaves perfectly contrast with other shades of green, while the flowering stalks are naked and slender. Even more than a dozen open flowers appear on a single tuft during the flowering period. This unique flower proves to be a great complement for borders, flower beds, lawns and arrangements in pots. It can be used to adorn walls and rock gardens. The California poppy will also look great as a path edging.
The California poppy grows best in a light lime and sandy soil. It prefers warm and sunny sites. The red-flowered plants are usually grown from seedlings. The seeds should be sown from April to May on a seed bed. The well developed seedlings are transferred to the target site in May 15 to 30 cm apart. The long blooming period and bright colouring can be supported and stimulated by the appropriate use of potassium and phosphorus fertilizer.
One package contains 1 gram of the red-flowered California poppy. The sow-by date and the growing instructions can be found on the back side of the package.
