Chrysanthemum-flowered aster "Flaming" (Callistephus chinensis) is a plant that fits into various garden arrangements. Broadly spreading annual plants develop an attractive, bushy habit and grow up to 50 cm tall. Asters bloom from beginning of summer until autumn. Often it is the first frost that takes them down. Blooms of this variety resemble chrysanthemums and take on deep red colour, that contrasts with the vivid green colouring of the leaves. The abundantly and long-blooming asters perfectly fit into edgings, borders and flower beds. Vividly red, beautiful blooms that may be used as cut flowers are one of the biggest assets of this cultivar.
March - April is the perfect time to sow aster seeds under covers. You should sow them onto the field no earlier than in May. Transplant the seedlings to the permanent site in May, too, as the plants will not be exposed to late spring frosts. These asters should be planted in 20 x 25-30 cm spacings. Planted on sunny and warm sites they will pay back with abundant blooming. Asters thrive in fertile, nutrient-rich and moist soils.
