Courgette 'Nimba' (Cucurbita pepo) is a very productive variety that develops a spreading, bushy habit. It develops club-shaped fruit covered with pale green skin that is decorated with dark smudges. The flesh is creamy-white, crunchy and juicy. Particularly the smaller fruit are delicious. You may use courgette fruit in the kitchen in many ways. They harmonize with meat and other vegetables. They taste great steamed, baked and grilled, may be frozen, pickled or marinated in vinegar.

Courgette may be grown either from direct sow to the borders or from seedlings. Mid-May is the right time to sow courgette seeds in the field, while sowing under covers takes place a few weeks earlier. The optimal spacings between the plants are 1 x 1 m. You will harvest first fruit at the beginning of summer already. Favourable conditions would allow to harvest until end of summer. Site selection is crucial in cultivating this vegetable. The location needs to be sunny and wind-sheltered with a fertile soil that is rich in humus, permeable and has high water capacity.
