Garden heliotrope (Heliotropium arborescens) is an annual border or pot plant, that delights us with tiny, blue-violet blooms that appear on the plants in large numbers. Sweet scent with a hint of vanilla attracts butterflies and equals in charm with the looks. Cherry pie, or common heliotrope, as this plant is also called, grows 50 - 60 cm tall and shows erect habit. Its straight stems, covered with large, thick, oval leaves covered with characteristic hairs, end with large umbels of star-shaped blooms, looking like bouquets ready to be put in vases. This charming plant looks equally great in balcony boxes, pots, as well as in the middle of borders in company of yellow and orange marigolds.
You should sow garden heliotrope seeds to the seeding trays at home already in early spring, although direct sow to the ground in late spring, end of May, would also be possible. This thermophilic species requires plenty of light, warmth and regular watering to bloom exuberantly. It thrives in every humous garden soil and blooms from end of June / beginning of July until September.
