Night-scented stock, also called evening stock (Matthiola longipetala ssp. bicornis) is a quickly growing annual plant with an unregular habit consisting of erect, branched shoots that grow 30 - 40 cm tall. These stems are densely covered by small, spiky leaves covered with fine grey hairs. Small, four-petal purple blooms gathered in loose clusters appear from June to August atop the stems. Flowers remain closed at daytime to open in the evening and excrete a pleasant, intense scent. Because of it, night-scented stock is recommended for cultivation in vicinity of evening relaxation spots, such as gazebos, and in containers on windowsills and balconies.

Night scented stock is a very easily cultivated plant. Its seeds are sown directly onto the field in April and May. The plants start to bloom after two months. In order to extend the blooming time until the end of summer you should gradually sow the seeds every two weeks. Night-scented stock grows well in every garden soil, however it prefers sandy-clay and moderately moist ones. It can grow both in the sun and in partial shade.
